Apple Release Logic Pro 9.1 with 64-bit Support

Wednesday 13 January 2010

Apple have updated Logic Pro to v9.1. This release provides bug fixes and feature enhancements, and also offers users the ability to run Logic in 64-bit mode under Snow Leopard (OS 10.6.2 required). A simultaneous release to MainStage also offers 64-bit support. logic studio

The main advantage of a 64-bit version is that Logic no longer has a 4GB memory limit, so users on systems with larger amounts of RAM can make use of any memory that isn't currently being claimed by the OS, ideal if you are using third party effects and instruments which are memory-intensive. Users can still use 32-bit third party plug-ins when in 64-bit mode, as Logic Pro and MainStage use a utility application called 32-bit Audio Unit Bridge.

There are some Logic Functions which are not available in 64-bit mode at present. These are:

  • Firewire streaming of video
  • Digital Cinema Desktop
  • AAF import and export
  • EuCon control surface support
  • Automap of parameters with control surfaces
  • OMF import and export
  • Conversion to MP3
  • Recycle (REX) file support
  • ReWire support
  • Vienna Symphonic Library Tool
  • Logic Node processing
  • AKAI format sample import

Users with the latest update can choose to run Logic in either 32- or 64-bit modes. Simply select the Logic Pro application in the finder, perform Get Info and select the "Open in 32-bit Mode" checkbox.

The MainStage application has also been updated to a 64-bit mode, with the same benefits.
