Canon have released their first professional HD
camcorder to feature Compact Flash recording - and more
importantly, they've done it really well.
The XF300 and XF305 feature
50Mb/s recording and MPEG-2 full HD 4:2:2 colour sampling, which
means you can get broadcast quality footage directly from the
inexpensive, hot swappable CompactFlash cards used in these
cameras. They also use the open source .MXF file format, which
means that the recordings are fully compatible with all the major
editing systems.
Both models feature Canon's advanced Digic DV III processor,
combined with a 1/3" 3CMOS sensor system and the bespoke 18x Canon
L-series Lens, which was designed specifically for this camera. The
1/3" type 3CMOS sensor gives a wide dynamic range and low noise,
and Canon have employed high-speed data readout technology to
minimise rolling-shutter skew - a common problem in other CMOS
camcorders.
There's also
16-bit linear PCM audio recording at 48KHz from the integrated mic
or from the two XLR inputs.
The slightly beefier XF305 comes with all these features plus
HD-SDI output, genlock input and timecode input/output for studio
and multi-camera operation.
